2020 Topps Now Turn Back the Clock #182 White Ash Parallel (2/3) PSA 9

Not sure of the point of grading a card such as this limited to three copies, especially if you're not 100% sure it's going to be a 10.  I'm guessing I paid as much for this one as I would have for a naked one, so scarce they are.  I had this on my watch list and it actually popped up a few months ago and I managed to win it.  The idea of adding bat wood parallels to a 1987 Topps homage set is pretty neat, especially because there are only two types to chase, and both are super limited.

I freed a Sabathia from its PSA prison back in the Thorzul Will Rule days, but this time I'm keeping this one intact.  I've got a nice shoebox going with a bunch of CCs in one-touch cases that this would go with nicely.

Note to Topps: Please stop making new CC Sabathia Brewers cards.  I'm at my Godfather III point already.

I miss the days when college basketball players were household names.  Sure, the tournament holds our attention for three weekends in March/April each year, but with star players spending a year, two tops, on campus, no one has really captured the zeitgeist since the 1990s.  Mourning and Hardaway were two of those guys.

1993 Topps Top Prospects Catchers - Piazza / Delgado

The players on this card had an unusually high rate of success.  Most of us know the career arcs of Piazza (Hall of Fame) and Delgado (reliable 2x All-Star, close a couple of times to MVP).  Fordyce carved out a very respectable career as a sometimes starter, sometimes backup catcher.  The only dud in the bunch is Leshnock, whose career peaked in a one-game stint in AA.  Three out of four ain't bad, though.

What Was I Thinking?:

1995 was the first year since I began collecting that I didn't buy a single baseball card.  I wasn't part of the late-1994 emergence of A-Rod cards on the market, so therefore these early cards of his are still exotic and exciting to me.  Whereas 1995 Fleer proper is an eyesore of a set, this Ultra design is unassuming, yet striking, evoking the '90s foil boom without scorching the retinas.  I like this card, I love the teal jersey, and the price was something I could live with.
